Postcard - Shell
This postcard depicts one of more than 1,500 shells in our collection, representing around 550 Linnaean species.
Carl Linnaeus is famous for his work in taxonomy: the science of identifying, naming and classifying organisms (plants, animals, bacteria, fungi and more).
The Society was founded on, and still holds, the library, manuscripts and specimen collections of the Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). The Linnaean Collections were acquired from the widow of Carl Linnaeus in 1784 by Sir James Edward Smith. Smith went on to found the Linnean Society so that Linnaeus’ collections could be preserved, studied and enjoyed by future generations.
